Piano
Traditional Piano
Visit a piano retailer to purchase a new or used instrument. Used pianos in good repair are also sold (or even given away) on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, BuyNothing, or similar sites. Once your instrument is delivered and set up, hire a piano tuner to tune it, as instruments go out-of-tune when moved or exposed to a change in temperature.
Digital Piano
The experience of playing a quality digital piano can match or even surpass the feel of a traditional piano. Essential features: full-length, 88-key instrument with fully weighted, graded, hammer-action keys.
Here’s an affordable digital piano and stand set-up we recommend:
Yamaha P71 digital piano: weighted action digital piano with 88 keys, sustain pedal, and power supply.
A note about keyboards: Keyboards look similar to digital pianos, but they do not have fully weighted, graded, hammer-action keys. Although keyboards offer some fun features, they keep your student from developing proper piano technique and are not recommended for piano instruction.
